It is named after Qinghai Lake, the largest inland saltwater lake in China. Qinghai Province is the source of the Yangtze River, Yellow River, and Lancang River, earning it the title "Source of the Rivers" or "Sanjiangyuan" (Source of Three Rivers). Breakfast

After breakfast, embark on a journey to Kumbum Monastery (Ta'er Temple), one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Known as the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug tradition, and revered as the "Second Lumbini of the World," this sacred site was established in 1560. The monastery features a unique blend of Tibetan and Han architectural styles and derives its name from the fact that the temple was built around a stupa, hence "Ta'er Temple" (Stupa Temple). After the visit, travel through Riyue Mountain (Sun and Moon Mountain), a natural boundary between agricultural and pastoral regions at an altitude of 3,510 meters. Here, you can listen to the moving legend of Princess Wencheng's journey to Tibet and admire the strikingly different landscapes on either side of the mountain.

Next, arrive at Qinghai Lake, the largest inland saltwater lake in China and ranked among the country's top five most beautiful lakes. Marvel at the vast, misty expanse where the azure sky seamlessly merges with the deep blue waters, creating a breathtaking panorama. Experience the pure beauty of the "sea of blue" and the surreal sensation of feeling close enough to touch the sky. The sacred lake ripples and sways in the mist, its hues shifting in the sunlight, each shade blending harmoniously with the rhythms of nature.

Later, proceed to Chaka Town for overnight accommodation.

Friendly reminder: The altitude of Chaka Town is 3,100 meters.

Delve into the mysteries of the lake's depths and experience the surreal spectacle of rolling salt waves left behind after the tide recedes. For a deeper exploration, take a small train ride into the heart of the lake for a unique perspective.

Afterward, continue your journey along the Jingzang Expressway to Golmud.

Golmud-Chaerhan Salt Lake-Oil Town-Dunhuang

4+ Star Hotel

Breakfast

In the morning, set off by vehicle to visit Chaerhan Salt Lake, located in the Qaidam Basin in western Qinghai. As China's largest salt lake and one of the world's most renowned inland salt lakes, Chaerhan is celebrated for its majestic landscapes and abundant salt resources. Over millennia, intense evaporation has formed a thick, solid salt crust on the lake's surface, so sturdy that factories, railways, and highways have been built atop it. Among its unique features is the famous "Ten Thousand Zhang Salt Bridge," a remarkable sight to behold.

Afterward, continue your journey to Dunhuang, crossing the Dangjin Mountain and passing by the filming site of Chronicles of the Ghostly TribeAksai Oil Town. Aksai, officially known as the "Aksai Kazakh Autonomous County," lies at the intersection of Gansu, Qinghai, and Xinjiang. The filming site is located in the old county town of Aksai, where the ancient theater, government compound, school, and other settings from the movie remain intact, offering a glimpse into the past.

In the evening, you may opt to watch the large-scale indoor immersive performance Encounter Dunhuang or Dunhuang Spectacle (90 minutes) at your own expense.

Friendly reminder: The altitude of Dunhuang city is 1,139 meters.

Mingsha Mountain--Mogao Grottoes

4+ Star Hotel

Breakfast

After breakfast, explore the enchanting Mingsha Mountain (Singing Sand Dunes) and Crescent Lake. The sand of Mingsha Mountain is soft and fine, displaying a spectrum of colors including purple, red, yellow, white, and black. From the base to the summit, the sand becomes progressively finer and smoother. When you hold a handful and gently squeeze it, it feels clean and dust-free, akin to gold sand repeatedly washed by clear water. Here, the mountain and the spring present strikingly different yet equally captivating landscapes, leaving visitors in awe of nature's grandeur. The crescent-shaped spring nestled within the sea of sand creates a magical scene, evoking the poetic imagery of "a vast moon rising with the tide, a pearl shining amidst a desert of endless dunes." After this unforgettable experience, head to your hotel in Dunhuang for check-in.

In the afternoon, visit the Mogao Caves, hailed as the "Treasure House of Eastern Art" and recognized as one of the most significant cultural discoveries of the 20th century. The preservation of Mogao Caves has been a story of resilience and struggle. Facing the Sanwei Peak, the caves are arranged in five tiers, with varying sizes and heights, densely scattered across the cliff face. Inside, you'll find majestic Buddha statues, exquisite murals, lifelike painted sculptures, graceful flying apsaras, and intricate compositions with vibrant colors—each element seemingly perfected as if created in a single day.

In the evening, you can explore the Shazhou Night Market to savor local delicacies and immerse yourself in the vibrant folk culture.

Constructed in 1372 during the Ming Dynasty, it took 168 years (1372–1539) to develop into a complete fortress. Jiayuguan Pass is the most imposing and strategically significant among the thousands of passes along the Ming Dynasty's Great Wall and remains remarkably well-preserved to this day.

After the visit, continue your journey by vehicle to Zhangye.

Honestly, I had a mix of nerves and excitement before this trip. My friends back in Mumbai thought I was crazy – "China? Really?" But I'd been staring at photos of those floating Avatar mountains for years, and I just had to see them for myself. So I booked the Zhangjiajie + Furong Ancient Town package through IntoExplore, and wow, I'm so glad I did.

Very helpful “Into Explore”
I first came across Into Explore while browsing travel reels about China on social media, and their content really stood out. I reached out with a few questions and was pleasantly surprised by how quickly Norman got back to me. To be honest, I was a bit cautious in the beginning—booking something like this online always comes with some uncertainty—but after several conversations and reviewing the proposed itinerary, I felt comfortable proceeding and placed an initial deposit. We traveled as a family, and from start to finish, the experience was incredibly smooth. Norman was flexible, patient, and always accommodating whenever we needed adjustments. Communication was consistent and reliable, which made a big difference. Once we landed in China, everything was handled flawlessly. The planning, coordination, and daily flow of activities were all executed with great attention to detail. We always knew what to expect the next day, which made the entire trip feel effortless and well-managed. Overall, it turned out to be a fantastic experience. I would confidently recommend Into Explore—and Norman in particular—to anyone considering a trip to China.

Very helpful “Into Explore”
I rarely write reviews, but this time I’d like to share my overwhelmingly positive thoughts about this trip. From the day I contacted this company, they have been very attentive and friendly. They did a great job planning my family holiday and supported us every step of the way. They put together a 14-day private tour for us, taking into account all our requests and requirements. In every city we visited, there was a reliable driver, a very nice car, and a guide to assist us throughout the day. I was initially anxious about traveling in a country where people don’t speak much English, but the guides made everything effortlessly convenient, including helping us choose food in local restaurants without English menus.I could go on describing all the wonderful things we saw in China, but to keep it short, I would simply encourage prospective customers to set aside any doubts and trust this company with their holiday planning. Thank you, guys!

Fast respond, helpful
Independent travel by train in China can be daunting ordeal. We decided to use Intoexplore for booking the trip and are very happy we did. It almost felt like Norman was a family member guiding us through how to use Alipay for payments in China to where to find the ticket office in the train station to convert digital tickets to paper. He was always available (sometimes at 6 am!) to answer any question and solve any problems that arose .. I would strongly recommend him to anyone who is thinking about independent travel to China .
