Your 3-day adventure begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Xining by your private driver and guide. 

Your first destination is the renowned Ta'er Monastery (Kumbum Monastery), one of the most important monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in 1577, it is the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school, and its stunning architecture is a harmonious blend of Han and Tibetan styles. You will have time to explore its grand assembly halls, admire the intricate yak butter sculptures, and see the iconic golden rooftops that shimmer in the plateau sun.

After immersing yourself in the spiritual atmosphere, you'll journey south towards Guide County, with the landscape gradually transforming into dramatic red cliffs and eroded landforms. Your next stop is the spectacular Guide A’shgong Geopark. This area is a geological wonder, showcasing the otherworldly beauty of the Danxia landform. Millions of years of tectonic movement and erosion have carved the mountains into layers of vibrant reds, oranges, and purples, creating a breathtaking canvas against the blue sky. It's a paradise for photographers and nature lovers.

Finally, you'll descend to the county town and visit the Yellow River Waterwheel Square. Here, you can witness a surprising sight: the famously muddy Yellow River flows clear and serene through Guide. A massive, ancient waterwheel stands as a symbol of the area's agricultural history. After relaxing by the riverside and taking in the view, you'll check into your hotel in Guide for the night.

After breakfast, depart Guide and head towards the vast plateau. Your first destination is the magnificent Longyangxia Reservoir, a massive hydroelectric dam on the Yellow River. The scale of the dam and the sprawling blue reservoir nestled between stark, arid mountains is an impressive sight, representing a significant feat of modern Chinese engineering. You'll have a chance to appreciate the sheer size of the canyon and the clear, emerald waters held back by the dam.

Continuing your journey westward, you will finally arrive at the "Blue Jewel of the Plateau," Qinghai Lake. You will enter the main scenic area at Erlangjian, a scenic peninsula that extends into the lake. This is the perfect spot to get up close to the largest inland saltwater lake in China. The contrast of the deep blue lake, the golden rapeseed flowers (in season), and the distant, snow-capped mountains is truly unforgettable. Take a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk, breathe in the fresh, thin air, and feel the vastness of this incredible landscape.

As the afternoon fades, you'll leave the lake behind and drive to the nearby town of Chaka. Known for its famous salt lake, the town has a relaxed, rustic charm. Upon arrival, you can settle into your hotel and perhaps take a walk to acclimatize to the altitude or simply prepare for the next day's highlight.

Your final day is dedicated to one of the most photogenic spots on the plateau: Chaka Salt Lake. Often called China's "Mirror of the Sky," this vast, shallow salt flat creates stunning reflections, perfectly mirroring the clouds and sky above. You will have the morning to explore this natural wonder. Walk far out onto the crystalline white expanse, and on a calm, clear day, you'll be treated to the illusion of walking on water, with your reflection captured perfectly beneath you. The salt sculptures and the old railway tracks add a unique artistic element to the surreal landscape. Note: You can bring rubber boots to comfortably walk through the shallow brine pools.

After a memorable morning immersed in the dazzling white of the salt lake, you'll begin your journey back to Xining. The drive retraces the route through the high mountain passes, offering a final glimpse of the diverse Qinghai landscape. You can reflect on the incredible contrasts of the past three days—from ancient monasteries and crimson geology to the deep blue lake and the mirrored salt flats.
