Breakfast & Lunch

In the morning, visit the Shanxi Museum, the largest center in Shanxi Province for the collection, preservation, research, and exhibition of cultural relics. Its predecessor was the Shanxi Educational Library Museum founded in 1919, and the new building was completed and opened to the public in 2005. The architectural design resembles both a 'dou' (ancient measuring vessel) and a 'ding' (ancient cooking cauldron), symbolizing the gathering of treasures and blessings. The museum is home to five major treasures: Jin Hou Bird Zun (Western Zhou), Houma Covenant Tablets (Spring and Autumn Period), Lacquer Screen from the Tomb of Sima Jinlong (Northern Wei), Beast-shaped Gong (Shang Dynasty), and Stone Coffin of Yu Hong (Sui Dynasty).

In the afternoon, head to the Wang Family Courtyard, a residential complex built during the Kangxi to Jiaqing reigns of the Qing Dynasty by the prestigious Wang clan of Lingshi. Most of the existing buildings were constructed between the Kangxi and Jiaqing periods, covering an area of 45,000 square meters with a building area of 32,000 square meters. During the Spring Festival each year, temple fairs are held here to celebrate the New Year, featuring a variety of fascinating folk performances such as land boat dancing, cart pushing, donkey running, and traditional dances.

Evening Option:

Return to Taiyuan and enjoy a local theater performance such as Jin Opera, a traditional form of Shanxi opera known for its strong vocals and vibrant costumes. It's a cultural immersion into the region's performing arts heritage.

Pingyao Ancient City--Linfen

4+ stars Hotels

Breakfast & Lunch

Join Intoexplore to visit Pingyao Ancient City, which was founded during the Western Zhou Dynasty (827 BC) and has a history of over 2,800 years. It is one of the most well-preserved ancient cities from the Ming and Qing Dynasties in China and was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1997. The ancient city is renowned for its intact city walls, rustic streets, and deep-rooted Jin Merchant culture. It is known as a treasure trove of Chinese ancient architecture. Highlights inside the city include: Rishengchang Exchange Shop (the first bank in China), Pingyao City Wall (World Heritage Site), Confucian Temple (one of the oldest Confucian temples in China), and the County Government Office (the most complete ancient county office still in existence). You may also enjoy famous Shanxi specialties such as Pingyao beef, oat noodles (youmian kaolaolao), steamed jelly (wantuo), and hand-pulled noodles (daoxiaomian).

After the tour, drive to Linfen.

Recommended Activities:

In the evening, take a walk along the ancient streets of Pingyao before leaving, where red lanterns light up the stone-paved lanes. Many shops stay open late and offer local crafts, shadow puppets, and traditional snacks.

Day 3: Pingyao - Linfen Day 3: Pingyao - Linfen Day 3: Pingyao - Linfen

Day 4:Linfen - Taiyuan

Hukou Waterfall--Return to Taiyuan

Breakfast & Lunch

After breakfast, visit Hukou Waterfall, the second largest waterfall in China and the largest yellow waterfall in the world. As the Yellow River rushes to Hukou, the riverbanks rise steeply on both sides, and the river narrows dramatically like the mouth of a kettle, hence the name 'Hukou Waterfall'. Within less than 500 meters, the river width narrows from 300 meters to just 20–30 meters, with 1,000 cubic meters of water per second plunging down a 20-meter cliff, creating the magnificent view of 'the Yellow River pouring into a single pot'.

Experiences:

  1. Ride a donkey and take photos in traditional Northern Shaanxi folk costumes, including headscarves and floral jackets.

  2. Ice waterfall light show: from December to February, colorful spotlights illuminate the frozen falls at night.

After the tour, return to Taiyuan.

Evening Option:

If time permits upon return to Taiyuan, enjoy a relaxing foot massage or wellness spa, a local tradition for easing travel fatigue before departure. Many spas also offer herbal therapy using traditional Chinese medicine.

We had a very memorable experience in Xi’An thanks to the expertise and helpfulness from Norman, who helped us planned our trip, and Waldener, our local tour guide from Into Explore. Norman helped us with the itinerary and bookings of transport and accommodations so it was stress free for me. He asked us our preferences when making the rooms reservation to cater to what we like and recommended the best way and places to explore this city. Our tour guide was also flexible with our schedule so we were able to do what we wanted and working around the weather. We were supposed to go Mt Hua on the 2nd day of our tour but it was forecasted to rain. He switched our itinerary around so we could climb Mt Hua on the 3rd day instead when the rain had stopped. Thank you Into Explore for giving us peace of mind to sit back and enjoy our vacation.

Independent travel by train in China…
Independent travel by train in China can be daunting ordeal. We decided to use Intoexplore for booking the trip and are very happy we did. It almost felt like Norman was a family member guiding us through how to use Alipay for payments in China to where to find the ticket office in the train station to convert digital tickets to paper. He was always available (sometimes at 6 am!) to answer any question and solve any problems that arose .. I would strongly recommend him to anyone who is thinking about independent travel to China .
