Beihai Park

Beihai Park is located in the north-central part of Beijing, northwest of the Forbidden City and Jingshan. It was built in the Song, Liao and Jin dynasties and is the oldest existing royal palace in the world. The layout of Beihai is based on Qionghua Island. The iconic White Pagoda of Yong'an Temple is built on the top of the island. It echoes with Tuancheng on the south bank and the palaces on the north bank, and they form the north-south axis of the garden. Beihai Park covers a total area of 682,000 square meters, of which 389,000 square meters are water area and 293,000 square meters are land area. It is the earliest, best preserved and most culturally profound classical royal garden in China's existing history, and a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.


Main scenic spots:

Qiongdao Scenic Area: This scenic area has scenic spots with Chinese ancient architectural features, including Yong'an Bridge, Yong'an Temple, Qiongdao Chunyin Monument, Yuegu Tower, Tongxian Chenglu Plate, and Zhizhu Hall

East Coast Scenic Area: The scenic spots in this scenic area include Haopujian, Huafangzhai, and Xiancantan

North Coast Scenic Area: The scenic spots in this scenic area include Xiaoxitian, Tieyingbi, Jiulongbi, Jingxinzhai, Kuaixuetang Calligraphy Museum, Wulong Pavilion, and Xitian Fanjing

Tuancheng Scenic Area: The scenic spots include Chengguang Hall, Yuweng


Main attractions:

White Pagoda: This is the most representative building in Beihai Park. It is located on Qiong Island in the center of Beihai. It is a Tibetan Buddhist pagoda with unique historical and cultural value.

Ningshou Palace: It was originally a royal palace and is now a museum, showing the history and culture of the Qing Dynasty.

Royal Garden: Located on the south side of Beihai Park, it is a typical traditional Chinese garden with exquisite garden landscape and lakes.

Beihai Park Cruise: In 2024, Beihai Park Cruise officially started sailing. Beihai Park’s 10 docks provide 460 cruises in 10 categories, including 4-seater, 6-seater, 8-seater, small ferry, large ferry, dragon boat, etc., and 40 antique ships have been added to meet the needs of different tourists. The cruise business hours are from 9:00 to 17:00

Beihai 24 Solar Terms Tickets: Beihai Park launched the Beihai 24 Solar Terms Tickets based on China’s intangible cultural heritage 24 solar terms, and selected 24 famous attractions in Beihai to correspond to them.

Opening hours: 

April 1-October 31: Open from 6:00 to 21:00 (no entry at 20:30); scenic spots and courtyards in the park: open from 8:00 to 18:00 (no entry at 17:30); except for the Tuancheng scenic area, closed on Mondays (except statutory holidays).

November 1-March 31: Open from 6:30 to 20:00 (no entry at 19:30); scenic spots and courtyards in the park: open from 8:30 to 17:00 (no entry at 16:30); except for the Tuancheng scenic area, closed on Mondays (except statutory holidays).


Transportation Guide:

Subway: Take Beijing Subway Line 6 to Beihai North Station, then walk for about 5 minutes.

Bus: Take Bus No. 101, 109 or 124 and get off at Beihai North Gate Station.

Taxi: From the city center, it takes about 10-20 minutes to take a taxi, and the fare is RMB 15-30.


Surrounding attractions:

The Palace Museum: It is only about a 15-minute walk from Beihai Park and is one of China's most important cultural heritages.

Jingshan Park: It is within walking distance from Beihai Park. Jingshan Park provides a full view of Beijing and is particularly suitable for photography.

Shichahai: It is also one of Beijing's old town areas, with many ancient alleys and waterways. Visitors can rent a boat to cruise the lake or take a walk.
