The Dujiangyan water conservancy project
The Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project, located in Sichuan Province, China, is an ancient engineering marvel dating back to 256 BC. Designed by the visionary engineer Li Bing, this innovative irrigation system was created to control the Min River's flow, preventing flooding while efficiently distributing water for agriculture in the surrounding areas.
The project features a series of canals, levees, and weirs, including the famous Fish Mouth, which divides the river into two channels: one for irrigation and one for flood control. The system is renowned for its sustainable design and has been operational for over two millennia, making it one of the oldest water management projects in the world.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Dujiangyan project not only demonstrates remarkable engineering but also reflects the harmony between human activity and nature.
