French Concession

French Concession

The French Concession in Shanghai was the largest and best developed of the four concessions of France in old China (Guangzhou Bay was not a concession and was under the jurisdiction of French Indochina). The French Concession reached its peak in the 1930s. After that, as the Japanese army invaded China, the French Concession briefly became an isolated island in Japanese-occupied Shanghai. In 1943, it was "handed over" from the then puppet Vichy French regime to the puppet Wang Jingwei regime and officially withdrew from the stage of history.
