3-Day Chengdu Spring Scenic Railway Itinerary

Immerse yourself in Sichuan's springtime splendor with this 3-day rail-themed adventure. Begin in Chengdu, where a private driver whisks you to a 4-star hotel in the historic Wuhou District. Spend your first evening meandering through lantern-lit Jinli Ancient Street, savoring osmanthus-scented treats and handcrafted souvenirs, then glide past neon-lit riverside bars on a Jiuyan Bridge Jinjiang Night Cruise.

Day 2 unveils the charm of rural Sichuan. Board the Jiayang Steam Train, the world's last operational narrow-gauge steam locomotive, as it chugs through golden rape flower fields near Qianwei County. Capture steam billowing over blossoms at Tianchihe Observation Deck before donning a miner’s helmet to explore the Huangcunjing Coal Mine, a century-old underground museum. Later, pedal bamboo bicycles through Baitang Village's endless flower fields or hike Luoquansi Hill for panoramic vistas.

On Day 3, visit the Leshan Giant Buddha, a 71-meter-tall UNESCO marvel framed by spring cherry blossoms. Cruise the Minjiang River for a dramatic full-body perspective of the Buddha, then return to Chengdu via Shuangliu Mianhua Street, where bamboo crafts and osmanthus pastries make perfect keepsakes.

This itinerary blends cultural immersion, industrial history, and natural beauty, offering a unique spring escape from bustling Chengdu to serene rural landscapes. Ideal for photographers, history enthusiasts, and nature lovers alike.

Day 1: Arrive in Chengdu

● Arrive in Chengdu and transfer to the hotel--Free Activities

● 4+stars Hotel

● None

Airport Pickup & Hotel Check-In: A private driver will welcome you at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport with a personalized sign, ensuring a smooth transfer to your 4-star hotel in the Wuhou District, ideally located near key attractions.

Free Time: Acclimatize to the city’s laid-back vibe with these spring-inspired activities:

● Jinli Ancient Street: Wander through lantern-lined alleyways where Qing Dynasty-style architecture meets vibrant spring blooms. Sample seasonal treats like osmanthus-flavored rice cakes or tanghulu (candied hawthorn skewers). Don’t miss the hand-painted fans and bamboo handicrafts at street stalls.

Jiuyan Bridge Jinjiang River Night Cruise: As dusk falls, board a traditional wooden boat for a serene cruise along the Jinjiang River. The riverbanks glow with neon lights, and you’ll pass under the historic Jiuyan Bridge (“Nine-Eyed Bridge”), where live music floats from riverside bars.

Recommended Activity: Dine at a riverside teahouse in Jinli, such as Xinjinlou, and watch a traditional Sichuan face-changing performance while sipping jasmine tea.

Pro Tip: Wear breathable shoes for walking; Chengdu’s spring humidity can make streets slightly damp.

Day 2: Chengdu - Leshan

● Jiayang Steam Train Ride - Huangcunjing Coal Mine Tour - Qianwei Rape Flower Fields - Transfer to Leshan

● 4+stars Hotel in Leshan

● Breakfast

Morning:

Jiayang Steam Train: Depart early for Qianwei County (2-hour drive from Chengdu) to board the world’s only operational steam-powered narrow-gauge train. As the train chugs through mountainous terrain, witness the iconic “Caihua Shan” (Rape Flower Mountain) section—where golden blossoms cascade down hillsides, contrasting with the train’s vintage green carriages and billowing steam. At Bamei Station, the train stops for a dramatic “steam show” against a backdrop of blooming canola fields.

Recommended Activity: Photograph the train from the Tianchihe Observation Deck using a low angle to capture the steam rising through the flowers; shoot in burst mode to freeze the motion of petals in the breeze.

Huangcunjing Coal Mine Tour: Descend into the century-old Huangcunjing Coal Mine, a living museum of China’s mining history. Equipped with a helmet and miner’s lamp, traverse tunnels lined with original machinery and learn about the “room-and-pillar” mining method. Highlights include a simulated coal extraction experience and a visit to the underground “water palace,” where stalactites glimmer in the dim light.

Travel Tip: Wear a light jacket—the mine maintains a cool 15°C year-round; avoid white clothing due to coal dust.

Afternoon:

● Rape Flower Field Exploration: Wander through the vast fields around Baitang Village, where bees buzz among blossoms and local farmers sell fresh honeycomb. For a unique perspective, climb the Luoquansi Hill overlook for a panoramic view of the patchwork fields intersected by the railway.

Recommended Activity: Use a macro lens to capture dewdrops on rape flower petals at dawn, or rent a bamboo bicycle to pedal along rural paths.

Evening:

● Transfer to Leshan: Drive 1.5 hours to Leshan, check into your hotel, and enjoy a leisurely evening.

Recommended Activity: Stroll along the Jiadingfang Historical Street near Leshan Giant Buddha, where ancient architecture houses artisanal shops. Dine on local specialties like qiaojiao beef (sliced beef in clear broth) or boboji (cold skewered meats in chili oil).

Day 2: Chengdu - Leshan Day 2: Chengdu - Leshan Day 2: Chengdu - Leshan

Day 3: Return to Chengdu

● Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area - Cruise on Minjiang River - Return to Chengdu

● None

● Breakfast

Morning:

● Leshan Giant Buddha: Explore the UNESCO-listed Giant Buddha, the world’s largest stone-carved Buddha statue (71 meters tall). Walk the Jiuqu Zhandao (Nine-Twist Path) down the cliff face for up-close views of the statue’s serene expression and intricate earlobes (each 7 meters long!). In spring, the surrounding cliffs are dotted with pink cherry blossoms and green bamboo.

Recommended Activity: Take a 40-minute boat cruise on the Minjiang River to admire the Buddha’s full grandeur from the water; the boat stops at prime photo spots, including the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu, and Qingyi Rivers.

Travel Tip: Arrive before 8:30 AM to avoid crowds; wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat—the riverside can be sunny.

Afternoon:

● Return to Chengdu: After lunch, embark on the 1.5-hour drive back to Chengdu. En route, stop at Shuangliu Mianhua Street to pick up spring-themed souvenirs, such as handwoven bamboo baskets or fragrant osmanthus-flavored pastries.

Farewell: End your journey with lasting memories of steam trains, golden fields, and the gentle embrace of Chengdu’s springtime charm.

Special thanks to my guide, Sofia. It's really hard for me to find a Spanish tour guide. She is professional and I have a good understanding about the China culture under her guide. During the Xi'an trip, I was shocked by the strong atmosphere of culture. I hope I can go next time, really love it.

Independent travel by train in China…
Independent travel by train in China can be daunting ordeal. We decided to use Intoexplore for booking the trip and are very happy we did. It almost felt like Norman was a family member guiding us through how to use Alipay for payments in China to where to find the ticket office in the train station to convert digital tickets to paper. He was always available (sometimes at 6 am!) to answer any question and solve any problems that arose .. I would strongly recommend him to anyone who is thinking about independent travel to China .
