Day 1: Qingdao Arrival

  • Arrival in Qingdao--Tsingtao Beer Museum--Qingdao Former Residence of the German Governor Museum
  • 4-Star Hotel
  • None

Welcome to Qingdao, a renowned coastal city boasting a charming coastline and high-quality Tsingtao Beer.

Your first stop is the Tsingtao Beer Museum. Upon entering, you'll see old-fashioned mash kettles and fermentation tanks silently displayed, narrating the brewing legend since the factory's establishment in 1903. Through multimedia interactive devices, you can immersively experience the whole process of malt rolling in the mash kettles and yeast "dancing" in the fermentation tanks. Sip a glass of beer; the golden liquid, topped with a creamy foam, releases a blend of malt aroma and the fresh fragrance of hops on your tongue, instantly revitalizing you for the journey ahead.

Next, visit the Qingdao Former Residence of the German Governor Museum. Built in 1905, this German-style building is a gem of architectural art. The red-tiled pitched roof complements the beige walls, with granite and wooden decorations enhancing each other. The Baroque-style columns and carved doors and windows exude luxury. Inside, the governor's drawing room, study, and bedroom have been restored, displaying pianos and silverware from a century ago. Even the wallpaper patterns are replicated to resemble those of the time. Strolling through it, you'll feel as if you've traveled back to the colonial era, truly touching the dust-laden threads of history.

Day 2: Qingdao

  • Laoshan Mountain - Lanchao Pavilion
  • 4- Star Hotel
  • Breakfast

Set off early in the morning for Laoshan Mountain and head to the Taiqing Scenic Area, known as the "No. 1 Mountain by the Sea." As soon as you enter the scenic area, a 36.9-meter-tall bronze statue of Laozi stands majestically, seemingly recounting the thousand-year-old Taoist rhyme. Start your hike from Bashui River. Along the way, you'll hear the gurgling of streams and see strange peaks and peculiar rocks on both sides, resembling "bonsai by the sea." When you reach Longtan Waterfall, the cascading water falls like a white silk ribbon, crashing into the emerald pool and creating a thousand snowy waves. Continuing your climb, you'll find Shangqing Palace, with its red walls and gray tiles nestled among verdant pines and cypresses. Inside, the incense smoke curls upwards, and the Taoist music lingers. Mingxia Cave, perched high on a cliff, seems like a fairyland amidst the swirling clouds and mist. Overlooking the vast mountains and seas, the magnificent scenery is truly exhilarating. Take a cable car down the mountain to enjoy the panoramic view of the mountains and the sea. Finally, arrive at Taiqing Palace, the largest Taoist sanctuary in Qingdao. Ancient ginkgo trees tower above, and the Sanqing Hall stands solemn and dignified. Here, you can listen to a Taoist priest's lecture and feel the profound tranquility of Taoist culture.

In the afternoon, return to the urban area and ascend Lanchao Pavilion on Xiaoyushan Park. You don't need to climb strenuously here but can enjoy an excellent viewing spot. Looking westward, the Zhanqiao Pier resembles a long dragon probing into the sea, and the red-tiled eaves of the Huilan Pavilion glisten brilliantly in the setting sun. Gazing eastward, you'll see the "international architecture" of Badaguan with red tiles dotted among the green trees. The First Bathing Beach is bustling with people, with the golden sand and azure sea outlining a beautiful arc. As dusk falls and the lights come on, the city's neon lights and the glittering waves on the sea blend harmoniously, creating a romantic atmosphere. Finally, take a stroll along the seaside promenade to Zhanqiao Pier, listen to the waves crashing against the shore, and watch the lights reflected on the water, feeling the gentle night of Qingdao's seaside.

Evening Free Activity Suggestion:

Head to May Fourth Square. The iconic sculpture "The Wind of May," with its spiral-ascending shape and passionate Chinese red, tells the story of the tumultuous history a hundred years ago. Against the backdrop of the sea and sky, it looks magnificent. Walk along the seaside wooden promenade and enter the 2008 Olympic Sailing Center. The docks are filled with yachts competing for attention, with the white sails of the boats contrasting beautifully with the blue sea and sky. The Olympic torch sculpture on the shore stands quietly, witnessing the glorious moments. As night falls and the lights come on, the Lover's Dam Bar Street is bustling with activity. Sit in an open-air bar, enjoy the sea breeze, and watch the neon lights of the city skyline flicker on the opposite bank, fully savoring Qingdao's fashion and romance.

Day 3: Qingdao departure

  • Qi Great Wall - Badaguan Scenic Area - End of the Trip
  • None
  • Breakfast

After breakfast, head to the Qi Great Wall. This is the earliest existing Great Wall in China with verifiable history, and the Qingdao section stretches 56.077 kilometers, winding among peaks such as Yueji Mountain and Xiaozhushan Mountain. Built with a mixture of earth and stone, it has an ancient and rugged appearance, like the Wangjiadunzi section which is trapezoidal. Here, you can touch the thousand-year-old history of China while immersing yourself in its cultural charm through flower fields and science popularization activities. It's an excellent place to explore Chinese history and culture and enjoy leisurely sightseeing.

In the afternoon, return to the urban area and stroll through Badaguan Scenic Area. Known as the "Museum of International Architecture," over 200 buildings with diverse styles are scattered here, each carrying a unique story. The Huashi Building, in the style of a German castle, has its exterior walls piled with granite and pebbles, looking mysterious and elegant. The Princess Building, with its blue and white exterior walls and pointed towers, is full of fairy-tale charm. The Butterfly Building is famous for being the shooting location of the movie "After the Peach Blossoms," exuding a literary atmosphere. Walking slowly along the tree-lined paths, with the shadows of plane trees swaying, you'll feel as if you're in a European town.

End of the Trip. If your schedule allows, we suggest visiting the Second Bathing Beach in Qingdao during summer. Compared to the First Bathing Beach, it is more tranquil. The sand is as fine as powder, and the sea water is clear and azure, with rugged reefs along the shore. You can set up a parasol on the beach and enjoy a sunbath; or step on the waves to pick up shells and catch crabs, full of childlike fun. You can also rent a kayak and paddle leisurely on the sea. When the setting sun casts a golden hue on the sea, walk barefoot on the beach, letting the waves gently kiss your ankles, and let this Qingdao trip end in contentment and satisfaction.

Finally, pack your bags and head to the airport or railway station, carrying full memories and embarking on your next journey.

Special thanks to my guide, Sofia. It's really hard for me to find a Spanish tour guide. She is professional and I have a good understanding about the China culture under her guide. During the Xi'an trip, I was shocked by the strong atmosphere of culture. I hope I can go next time, really love it.

Independent travel by train in China…
Independent travel by train in China can be daunting ordeal. We decided to use Intoexplore for booking the trip and are very happy we did. It almost felt like Norman was a family member guiding us through how to use Alipay for payments in China to where to find the ticket office in the train station to convert digital tickets to paper. He was always available (sometimes at 6 am!) to answer any question and solve any problems that arose .. I would strongly recommend him to anyone who is thinking about independent travel to China .
