Xi'an Taiyuan Pingyao Datong 7-Day Tour

This seven-day exploration unveils the magnificent historical legacy of China's heartland, taking travelers through four extraordinary cities that together narrate the story of Chinese civilization. The adventure begins in Xi'an, where the silent Terracotta Army stands guard over the tomb of China's first emperor, their individualized faces frozen in time since 210 BCE. The city's ancient Muslim Quarter buzzes with life, its narrow alleys fragrant with the aroma of sizzling lamb skewers and freshly baked naan bread, offering a living testament to the Silk Road's multicultural heritage.

Continuing to Shanxi Province, the provincial capital Taiyuan reveals its dual identity as both industrial hub and cultural repository. The Shanxi Museum's vast collection showcases bronze artifacts from the Zhou dynasty alongside exquisite Buddhist sculptures, while the nearby Jinci Temple complex, with its 3,000-year-old cypress trees and the famous "Smiling Maiden" statue, exemplifies classic Chinese temple architecture.

The journey reaches its zenith in Pingyao, a perfectly preserved merchant town where Ming and Qing dynasty buildings line cobblestone streets unchanged for centuries. Here, the pioneering Rishengchang Exchange - the world's first draft bank - offers fascinating insights into China's financial history.

The final destination, Datong, presents breathtaking Buddhist art in the Yungang Grottoes' 51,000 carved statues, while the gravity-defying Hanging Temple clings precariously to a cliffside, embodying ancient Chinese architectural genius.

Throughout the journey, regional specialties like Xi'an's biangbiang noodles, Pingyao's air-dried beef, and Datong's millet congee provide delicious counterpoints to the visual splendor. This carefully curated route offers not just sightseeing, but an immersive experience into China's imperial past, Buddhist heritage, and commercial history, with each destination revealing another layer of this ancient civilization's enduring legacy.

Special thanks to my guide, Sofia. It's really hard for me to find a Spanish tour guide. She is professional and I have a good understanding about the China culture under her guide. During the Xi'an trip, I was shocked by the strong atmosphere of culture. I hope I can go next time, really love it.

Independent travel by train in China…
Independent travel by train in China can be daunting ordeal. We decided to use Intoexplore for booking the trip and are very happy we did. It almost felt like Norman was a family member guiding us through how to use Alipay for payments in China to where to find the ticket office in the train station to convert digital tickets to paper. He was always available (sometimes at 6 am!) to answer any question and solve any problems that arose .. I would strongly recommend him to anyone who is thinking about independent travel to China .
